Life of Christ Cycle at Sant'Apollinare Nuovo: Detail, the resurrection of Lazarus

This is one of the 13 mosaics along the upper band of the left wall of the nave that follow the life of Christ.

The Lazarus episode is narrated in John 11:1-44. Four days previously, Lazarus was wrapped in linen cloths and interred in a tomb. At the request of his sisters Jesus calls him back to life. In the mosaics, Jesus usually blesses a person as here, with the fingers of his right hand held in the "Old Believers" configuration.
