Gian Maria Morlaiter
Jesus and the Cure at Bethsaida

1748-50
Church of Santa Maria del Rosario ("The Gesuati"), Venice, Italy

There are two episodes in the gospels where Jesus tells someone to take up his bed and walk, once in Nazareth (Matthew 9) and once at the pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem (John 5). The latter city is suggested by the grand architecture in the background of this relief, and the structure under the sick man's left foot seems to be the rim of the pool. The jar and bowl near his right foot also suggest the presence of a pool.
