Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni
St. Anthony Abbot
1416
Fresco
Oratorio of St. John the Baptist, Urbino, Italy
Attributes include the saint's tau cross and long, forked beard. There could well have been a pig at his feet, as is common in other portraits, but the lowest part of the fresco is now lost
An unusual touch is the pair of beads hanging from his left hand, a symbol of the contemplative's life of prayer. Also unusual is the full head of hair; the saint is usually shown bald or balding.
