This image combines two traditions: St. Michael's victory over Satan (hence the sword in the upraised arm) and his role in the psychostasy (hence the weighing scales with "souls" in them). Like a knight of the 15th century, he wears a complete suit of armor – plus a velvet cape with a jeweled clasp.
