St. John the Evangelist and Two Commentators

1220-30
Detail of the fresco on the apsidal vault, Church of St. John, Taufers, Italy

John is represented as always by an eagle. On the stand are two books, perhaps copies of John's gospel. The figure on the left has written the words [H]OMILIA GREGORII PAPE SUPER IOANNEM, "Homily of Pope Gregory on John." This is the basis for my assumption that all the writers in the fresco are specific commentators on the gospels.
