St. Michael the Archangel is pictured driving Satan down into the underworld. As with many military saints, he wears a Roman-style breastplate, a skirt, and boots. One hand holds the sword that is a common feature of such images; the other holds the scales that are pictured in images of Michael presiding over the judgment of souls on the last day. Scales, of course, are also attributes of Justice personified and thus appropriate to officers of the court.
