Master of St. Veronica
St. Veronica with the Holy Kerchief

Circa 1420
Tempera on oak, 30¾ x 19 in. (78 x 48 cm.)
Alte Pinakothek, Munich

The kerchief features the crown of thorns, suggesting that the artist was working with the assumption that it was during has ascent to Calvary that Jesus imprinted his face on the cloth – not, as the Golden Legend and other earlier texts had it, during the years of his ministry.

The floriated nimbus is seen from time to time in Veronica and Holy Face images in this century.
