The Apse at St. Praxedes, Rome: Detail, right side

9th century
Mosaic
Basilica of St. Praxedes, Rome

On the left side of Christ is St. Peter, identified by his short, square beard and by the complementary presence of St. Paul on the left side. He presents St. Pudentiana to Christ. She is carrying her golden martyr's crown as an offering, her hands covered with a ceremonial cloth as in imperial ritual of the time. Like her sister on the other side of the apse, she is dressed as a female of the imperial court of the day.

The figure on the right is probably St. Lawrence. A 5th century fresco inscribed with his name also has the figure tonsured, wearing a dalmatic, and carrying a rather large book.
