Miracles of Elijah and Elisha

Mosaic
Nave, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome

Elijah stands with his cloak in the upper register. According to 2 Kings 2:8 he used his cloak to strike the River Jordan, which then parted so he and Elisha could pass. In the lower register Elisha blesses a polluted spring near Jericho with the words, "Thus saith the Lord: I have healed these waters, and there shall be no more in them death or barrenness" (2 Kings 2:19-21).

This is part of the extensive series of Old Testament scenes along the two walls of the nave. Follow this link for links to the others.
