St. Mary Magdalene Praying with the Cross of St. Camillo of Lellis

1698
Church of La Maddalena, Rome

This painting is an adaptation of the iconographical type in which St. Mary Magdalene prays before a cross in her cell, surrounded by objects associated with the eremitic life. The broad shape of the planks that form the cross is characteristic of the cross on the habit of the Order of Clerks Regular, which was founded by St. Camillo de Lellis. The order has maintained the church since 1586.
