The Presentation of the Virgin

Fresco
Church of Santa Maria dell'Anima, Rome

The modern sensibility may shudder at the thought of bringing a small child into service in a temple, but this painting makes it a double of the act of charity in the foreground. Also presented for the viewer's contemplation is what the beggar's well toned body says about the small child that is his compositional double.
