St. Eligius (St. Eloi)

19th or 20th century
Church of St. Marcel
St. Marcel, Aveyron, France

From his humble beginnings as a smith St. Eloi became a counselor to the King of the Franks and eventually was appointed bishop of Noyon. Thus the sculptor has given him both the vestments of a bishop and, at his right foot, a hammer and anvil to signify his original trade.
