Altarpiece of the Trinity

19th century
Wood, polychrome
Santísima Trinidad de Arre, Villava (Pamplona), Spain

This is the Trinity image that developed in the 16th century and has been standard in the West since the 17th. The Father is pictured as an old man with a beard; The Son, as a man in early middle age holding the Cross and sitting "on the right hand of the Father," as in the Apostles' Creed. The Spirit hovers above them as an illuminating dove. The saints are San Fermin on the left and St. Francis Xavier on the right.
