Jacinto Vieira
St. Gertrude

1725
Painted wood
Choir of the monastery church, Aruca

The statue confuses St. Gertrude of Hackenborn, who was an abbess and thus had a crozier, with St. Gertrude of Helfta, whose attribute is the symbol of the burning heart and Christ Child that we see on the breast of this statue.

This is one of a series of Benedictine female saints that Vieira made for the choir.
