St. Eulalia on the Bonfire

1519
Relief
Choir, Barcelona Cathedral

St. Eulalia lies naked and supine on flames. In Prudentius this is the "final torture," but in the Cantilène d'Eulalie the flames refuse to harm her because of her innocence, so Maximian orders her beheaded. Thus we see the executioner in the foreground with the sword.

This is part of a series of reliefs on the trial and martyrdom of St. Eulalia.
