This recent work is modern in style and in contemporary references such as the soldiers' spiked helmets and science-fiction armor. But it also uses traditional details such as the skull, Veronica's veil, and Jesus' fall under the weight of the cross. The choice of the veil and the fall may have been influenced by their presence among the "Stations of the Cross" common in 20th-century churches.
