St. Bartholomew

Navarre (Aguilar de Codes), second third of 16th century
Wood, polychrome
Refectory Museum, Cathedral of St. Mary, Pamplona, Spain

Instead of the usual image with the flaying knife, this sculpture focuses on St. Bartholomew's victory over the demon Astaruth, whom he put into chains of fire for besetting a city in India.

The saint's curly hair is a detail from the Golden Legend. The book is a common item in images of apostles.
