St. Agnes

16th century
Wood, polychrome
Altarpiece of St. Anne, Chapel of the High Constable
Burgos Cathedral, Spain

Dressed in contemporary finery, St. Agnes is pictured with a book and her attribute, a lamb. The statue's broken left arm seems to point forward, as if she were holding something, possibly a palm branch signifying her martyrdom. The hair is blond, as is usual for virgin martyrs.

The altarpiece features similar sculptures of many of the most popular female saints.
