Pio Cristiano Sarcophagus 31551: Detail, Jesus Resurrects the Daughter of Jairus

Instead of the more usual representation of the raising of Lazarus, this sarcophagus uses the daughter of Jairus (Matthew 9:18-19,23-26; Mark 5:22-24,35-42; Luke 8:41-42,49-56) to reference Christ's power to effect life after death. The same occurs in the Pio Cristiano's sarcophagus 31541.

The gospels tell of only one child resurrected by Jesus. She is identified as the daughter of a synagogue official named Jairus in Mark and Luke. Matthew simply calls the man "a certain ruler" but from the other details it is clear that he is telling the same story as in Mark and Luke.

The man on the left seems rather youthful to be a "ruler" and the father of a 12-year-old. Nor does he resemble the figure that could be John in the next scene.
