Pio Cristiano Sarcophagus 31551: Detail, Jesus Cures the Woman with the Flow of Blood

See Matthew 9:20-22. As in the blind man's cure to the left of this scene, Jesus uses the occasion to emphasize salvation by faith: in the Vulgate, Confide filia fides tua te salvam fecit, "Courage daughter, your faith has saved you."

The image itself follows all the traditional elements in the iconography of this episode. The woman kneels and touches the hem of Jesus' toga while he puts his hand on her head, a gesture that signifies his words in the text. The disciple on the left is posed so as to signify the words of the disciples, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou who hath touched me?"
