Jesus Before Pilate
Tempera and gold on wood panel
Pincoteca Vaticana, Rome
His hands bound, Jesus confronts Pontius Pilate. The gesture of the Jewish official behind him indicates speech – presumably, his words of accusation. The moment in the scene thus precedes the more commonly pictured moment when Pilate washes his hands.
