The Life of St. Paul: The Blinding of the False Prophet

Circa 1857-60
Oil on canvas
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

This is from a series of paintings by various artists that line the nave and transept of the basilica. Here we see the false prophet Elymas Bar-Jesus, who has gone blind after opposing Paul. The event moved the proconsul Sergius Paulus, shown seated in white, to come to believe. See Acts 13:6-12.
