The Life of St. Paul: The Jailer Believes

Circa 1857-60
Oil on canvas
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

This is from a series of paintings by various artists that line the nave and transept of the basilica.

In Acts 16:25-34 an earthquake breaks the chains in the prison where Paul and Silas are being held. The jailer fears that he will be punished, but Paul reassures him and the jailer asks what he needs to be saved. Paul answers, "Believe in the Lord Jesus."
