St. Matthew

Mid-12th century
Mosaic
Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio ("The Martorana"), Palermo, Sicily

Like the portraits at the other three corners of the dome, this mosaic seats the evangelist at a writing table with a pen and book. He is identified by the Greek inscription Ο ΑΓΙΟC ΜΑΤΘΕΟC, "Saint Matthew." The Greek words in the banderole are the first verse of Matthew's gospel: βιβλοc γενεcεωc ιησου χριστου υιου δαβιδ υιου αβρααμ, "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."
