Master of the St. Mary Polyptych (attrib.)
The Palazzo Bellomo St. Lawrence Altarpiece: Detail, Lawrence Distributes the Church's Treasure to the Poor

Fulfilling the wishes of Pope Sixtus, Lawrence gives to the poor from the treasures of the Church, which is symbolized by the altar and books at the left. In Prudentius the Emperor's idea is that the treasure comprises the vessels of gold and silver used in the liturgy, but in the Golden Legend it is the cash that a high-ranking Christian gave "to St. Sixtus and to St. Laurence, to the end that if it happed to him to be slain of Decius that they should give this treasure to poor people and to the churches."
