Mattia Preti, The Four Evangelists

17th century
Oil on canvas, 60.2 x 81.5 in. (153 x 207 cm.)
Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, Palermo, Sicily

Preti identifies each evangelist differently: Matthew by his angel, John by the upward gaze with pen in hand that we see in images of him on Patmos, Mark rather comically using his lion as a writing desk, and in the background Luke with his ox, painting his picture of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child.
