The Creation of Eve

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

Genesis 21-22b is summarized in the inscription, inmisit dominus soporem in adam et tulit evam de costis eius, "The Lord put Adam to sleep and drew Eve forth from his ribs." As before, God sits on a symbol of the universe and holds in his right hand the scroll that signifies the divine authority by which he does such things.
