Olivuccio di Ciccarello
The Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine of Alexandria

Circa 1440
Tempera and gold on wood panel. From a small altar.
Pinacoteca Vaticana, Rome.

Catherine is identified by her crown, martyr's palm, and broken wheel. The child reaches from Mary's lap to pass the saint a wedding ring. The cloudy sky in the background is a neat way of reminding the viewer that this is a vision that Catherine had, not a snapshot of an earthly event.
