The Apse Mosaic at St. Paul Outside the Walls: Detail of the Apostles on the Right

Circa 1220
Mosaic
St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

The apostles are (from left to right) James, Bartholomew, Thomas, Simon, Matthias, and Mark. Their scrolls bear phrases from the Gloria, a hymn sung during the Mass.

Saints Peter and Andrew are not in the series, being represented in the main image above. To make up twelve figures, the artist has included Barnabas on the far left and Mark on the far right.
