Dominican Nun |
Dominican nun: The figure gazes sadly at what remains of a crucifix in the left hand. Where the toes have been scuffed one can see that fabric formed one of the layers of the bare foot. The skin is unnaturally white, the eyebrows and lashes quite dark.
Site: Church of Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán. Location: Under a canopy, at the right end of the third of the four retablos along the north wall of the nave (see note). Media and construction: Wood, gesso, paint, fabric habit. Eyes: glass. Sculpted teeth. Size: About 4 feet (120 cm.) Previous santo Introduction to the church at Yanhuitlán Note: On this site, references to the cardinal directions always assume that the main altar is at the east end of the church, the narthex or entry area at the west end, and the two walls of the nave on the north and south. (The nave is the long central section.) Actual orientations may differ. The photo shown here is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.
