St. Peter's Basilica, Rome

Like millions before her, a visitor rubs the foot of the famous statue of St. Peter. The figure carries the keys of Peter's authority and is enthroned as "Prince of the Apostles" in this Roman Catholic venue. As from the earliest times, he is shown with a short, square beard. Unlike many artists of his time, Arnolfo has given the saint a full head of hair, eschewing the tonsure-like baldness seen in many medieval images.
