St. John the Evangelist

5th century
Fresco
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls

This portrait of St. John the Evangelist is part of a fresco with six Apostles standing in a row. He holds a scroll that has become unreadable. His name is inscribed in the bottom band of the fresco, and he is portrayed as a young man without a beard, a convention that will be observed throughout the centuries.
