Cola dell'Amitrice
The Assumption of the Virgin

Circa 1515
Oil on wood
Musei Capitolini, Rome

The museum identifies this as an Assumption, but it seems to be a strange hybrid of Dormition and Assumption images. As in many Assumptions, Mary is in a mandorla being borne heavenward by angels while some of the men below gesture toward her. But her body is also pictured on her deathbed, as in Dormitions, and the apostles assist at her Last Rites while Peter in the middle reads from the Office of the Dead.
