St. George

Circa 1472
Tempera on wood, gold ground
Metropolitian Museum of Art

St. George wears a fantastical take on contemporary armor and holds the spear that he has broken in the head of the dragon lying at his right. The spear has the red and white colors associated with his red-cross shield, which the artist has chosen not to include.

The panel was originally part of a polyptych; another panel from the same polyptych features St. Dominic.
