Luca Giordano
The Flight into Egypt

1701
Oil on canvas
Metropolitan Museum of Art, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Morton Landon, 61.50

Paintings with the Holy Family on a boat are almost always labeled "The Flight into Egypt," and the size of the baby would suggest that he was born only recently. But the sources in the apocrypha give the impression that the family used a boat on their return to Israel.
