Master of the Orcagnesque Misericordia, Crucifix: Detail, St. Anthony of Padua

14th century
Tempera on wood, gold ground
Metropolitan Museum of Art, gift of Samuel Kress, 27.231ab

This little portrait at the foot of a processional cross has St. Anthony with only one of his attributes (besides his tonsure and Franciscan habit), the closed book that refers to this accomplished preacher's defense of the faith against heretics. At the top of the cross is a similar ellipse with a portrait of St. Francis.
