Spanish (Aragon) circa 1470-1505
Tempera and gold on wood
The Cloisters, New York City. Gift of W. M. Laffan, 10.12a,b.

A servant pours water into a shallow dish into which Pilate reaches with his left hand. But his right hand rests on Jesus' shoulder, as if this were the moment of his saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood" (Matthew 27:24).
