The Circumcision
German (Cologne), circa 1460-1470
Pot-metal glass and vitreous paint
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2003.14
The distinguishing feature of a Circumcision image is of course the knife, here held by the mohel while an attendant with a dish waits to catch the blood. Mary stands at right; the high priest, in a bishop's mitre, sits at left with the baby on his knee.
