Camillo Rusconi
St. Matthew

1708-18
Marble, 14 feet high
Basilica of St. John Lateran, Rome<

Rusconi eschews the angel that is St. Matthew's usual attribute and instead uses a bage of coins, which lie under his foot as ungodly characters do in many medieval images of saints. The book is a quite common element in images of St. Matthew.

This is one of twelve monumental statues of the apostles, by various artists, lining the nave of the basilica.
