Bernardo Daddi, Saint Reparata Before the Emperor Decius

First half of 14th century
Tempera on wood
Metropolitan Museum of Art, 43.98.3, Bequest of Maitland F. Griggs

This image does not use or need attributes to identify St. Reparata, because it is taken from an altarpiece that pictured her story. In this panel she stands resolutely before Decius, who praises her and invites her to sacrifice to the gods. (The label at the museum calls the man on the throne "the Emperor Decius," but St. Reparata's Passio calls him Praeses Decius thirteen times. A praeses is a provincial governor.)

Reparata wears a crown in most other images, and in many her gown is green.
