The Conques Last Judgment Tympanum: Detail, Christ in the central mandorla

Over his tunic Christ wears a pallium. At the his feet two angels with candles stand guard in what might be a stylized sea. (In Revelation 4:6 there is a "sea of glass" before the throne.)

The shadow in this photograph obscures two angels who stand above Christ's right and left hands. The angel on the right has a scroll with some of the words from Matthew 25:34, Venite benedicti Patris mei possidete paratum vobis regnum – "Come ye blessed of my Father, possess the kingdom prepared for you." On the left, the angel's scroll reads DISCEDITE A ME and then apparently MALEDICTI IN IGNEM ETERNUM, "Depart from me ye damned, into eternal fire" (Matthew 25:41).

The angel on the left with the censer may be a reference to Revelation 8:3, where the censer is used to "offer of the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar, which is before the throne of God." This verse follows the opening of the "seventh seal" which brings the final tribulations.
