Detail of the Conques Last Judgment Tympanum: The Psychostasy, Torments of the Damned

The figure on the far left is St. Michael holding a scale with his left hand. (Only the baskets of the scale have survived the centuries.) His right hand holds a sword or dagger. His antagonist the demon to the right tries to fix the verdict by pressing down on one of the baskets. Behind the demon, other demons torment two souls. A suicide lies prone beneath two demons facing in opposite directions (see detail). The soul to the right of that group appears to be a musician; his torturer has confiscated his harp and is removing his tongue.

The inscription lists various types of sinners. Beneath the three demons on the right are the words mendaces, "liars"; falsd, "false"?; and cupidi, "covetous ones."
