Saints Bartholomew and James

11th or 12th century
Ivory plaque
Musée National de l'Age Médiévale, Paris

On the left St. Bartholomew is identified only by the inscription s BAR THO LO MEUS and not by any attribute. He points to a gospel book in his left hand. An identical book is in the hand of the saint on the right, who is labeled s iaco bus, "St. James." It is uncertain whether he is James the Greater or James the Less, but the object in his right hand could possibly be a miniaturized fuller's club, the weapon by which James the Less was assassinated.
