Detail of the Fulda Portable Altar: Abraham, Isaac, and the Hand of God

The story of Abraham's interrupted sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22:9-13) occupies the entire lower register of the altar surface. On the left the ram is caught by its horns in the briers; on the right, the wood on the altar is already burning. In the center, as Abraham raises his sword a hand from Heaven represents God's words, "Lay not thy hand upon the boy."
