Paolo Uccello, St. George and the Dragon

Circa 1460
Oil on canvas
National Gallery, London

This painting does not follow the Golden Legend quite as faithfully as others of the time. George has no shield, the dragon apparently inhabits a cave rather than a lake, and nothing indicates that the city is nearby. One interesting detail from the Legend is that the princess has the dragon on a leash that was her girdle.
