Donatello, The Entombment

Responding to the classical emphases of the early Renaissance, Donatello puts the action in a perspectival frame that softens the emotional impact. But the figures around the tomb continue to express sorrow as in earlier examples. At the left end of the sarcophagus, Mary kisses the face of her son. At the right end another woman kisses his feet, while in the center Mary Magdalene weeps disconsolately.
