Florence, 14th century
This has all the features of a traditional Ascension image except for the absence of angels. Christ blesses the viewer from his throne in a mandorla. The Virgin Mary stands directly below in orant posture, wearing the traditional blue mantle. Six Apostles stand on each side. On the left the Apostle in green is St. Peter (balding from the back, square beard). Anachronistically, St. Paul (balding from the front) stands on the right with a book.
