St. Philip

Byzantine, 10th century
St. Catherine's Monastery, Sinai

As in later eastern-influenced images, St. Philip has a long face and straight brown hair. Here the forelock is a bit mussed; in other images it is neatly bifurcated. His left hand holds a scroll and his right is configured for a blessing gesture – another feature that will continue in later images.
