The Baptism of St. Longinus

Germany, 1489
Landesmuseum Württemberg

This is just one of the 24 panels of the Weingarten Triptych of the Holy Blood, which details the legend by which drops of Christ's blood were collected at the foot of the Cross by Longinus and eventually came to Weingarten Abbey, near Ravensburg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Here we see the saint's baptism by St. Peter, attended by Mary and the other apostles. The haloed saint in red on the left has the pointy beard often associated with St. Paul.
