Juan Fernández Navarrete, "El Mudo"
The Martyrdom of St. James the Greater

1571

As in the Golden Legend, St. James is martyred by beheading. To the left of the saint are the most common attributes used in his portraits: the pilgrim's hat with cockle-shell emblem and the staff with a hook. In the background we also see St. James as matamoros: on horseback with a sword, defeated enemies lying around him on the ground.
